Study Abroad

“This for me is the year of saying ‘yes’, and since I got off that plane I haven’t once regretted it.” Linda Horsburgh

The optional study abroad year is the opportunity to turn your three year degree into a four year degree by spending a year studying at an overseas university.

Spending time studying abroad can be a rewarding and life changing experience, giving you a unique opportunity to discover different cultures and enhance your career prospects.

The study abroad year takes place between levels two and three at an approved international university. Your studies can either be related directly to theatre and performance, or can be a ’horizon’ year in which you will focus on the language and culture of a country. There are possibilities across the world and our students have previously studied in Australia, Canada, China, Germany, Mexico, New Zealand, and USA.

We have over 60 university-wide exchanges, including with many of the world’s top-ranking institutions. Destinations include the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Israel, East and South-east Asia, Europe, South Africa and Latin America.

In addition, PCI has department specific partnerships with:

Shanghai Theatre Academy, China

The University of the Arts, Helsinki, Finland

Siegen University, Germany

Telemark University College, Norway

In the last two years our students have been to:

Australia (Griffith, Monash, Queensland, Sydney)
Canada (Calgary, McGill, McMaster, Western Ontario)
China (Shanghai Theatre Academy)
Germany (Siegen)
New Zealand (Wellington)
USA (California Santa Cruz, Massachusetts, North Carolina State, Illinois)

Students also have the opportunity to apply for short study abroad programmes that usually run through the summer period. While participation in a short programme won’t count towards your degree, it will still give you a valuable experience to put on your CV. Students can apply for subsidised short programmes in Europe, Asia and Latin America.

Students can be supported to apply to study abroad by the Study Abroad Office or the School’s Study Abroad Tutor, Fiona Bannon or Student Education Service Officer Emma Barker.
