Emeritus Professor Mick Wallis

Emeritus Professor of Performance and Culture

Joining the School in 2002, I was its Director of Research 2003-8 and Pro-Dean for Research & Innovation in PVAC Faculty 2009-14. My often interdisciplinary research has embraced cultural histories of performance; performance theory; arts work with people; sexual politics and sexuality; and performance, design and technology. Simon Shepherd and I co-authored Drama / Theatre / Performance (Routledge New Critical Idiom, 2004). In my retirement, we are preparing the 4th edition of Studying Plays for Bloomsbury and I am completing a monograph, Village Drama in Interwar England: fields and formations.

Biography

My 2001National Teaching Fellowship funded the Arts Work with People Project, conducted with arts charity Salamanda Tandem.

I was Principal Investigator on ‘Emergent Objects 2: Designing the human/technology interface through performance’ (EPSRC/AHRC Designing for 21st Century, 2007-8) and lead author of ‘Embodied conversations: performance and the design of a robotic dancing partner’, Design Studies 31(2): 99-117, winner of the 2010 Design Studies Award.

In 2012, Joslin McKinney and I curated Performance Studies international #12 (450 delegates) and founded Ludus Festival Leeds.

I led the Research Assessment Exercise submission for PCI in 2008 and the Research Excellence Framework submissions for PVAC Faculty in 2014.

In 2011 I launched the University’s research transformation project Culture, Society and Innovation Hub as its director and worked with Arts Faculty to launch the sector-facing Cultural and Creative Industries Exchange – subsequently working to unite these in the present Cultural Institute.

External appointments: Board member, Salamanda Tandem 2001-8; Editorial Board, Performance Research, 2007- present; Board of Directors, Performance Studies international 2010-13.
