Alice is a Professor in Applied Performance and is Head of the School of Performance and Cultural Industries. Within the broad field of Applied Performance her expertise lies in using performance as a means of promoting social agency and engagement. Her research interests are concerned with open forms of participation, play and performance especially within the contexts of popular music festivals and underground club culture.

Associate Professor in Scenography and Deputy Head of School
Building on 10 years experience as a set and costume designer and practice-led research into scenography, I have been actively contributing to the development of scenography as an area of academic study internationally. I am the lead author of the Cambridge Introduction to Scenography (Cambridge University Press, 2009) and co-editor of Scenography Expanded: An Introduction to Contemporary Performance Design (Bloomsbury Methuen 2017). In June 2015 I was appointed to chair the international jury for the Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space. I am a member of the AHRC peer-review college.

Associate Professor in Audience Engagement; Postgraduate Research Tutor
With a professional background in theatre management and producing, I now lecture and research in areas of audience engagement, arts management, arts marketing and cultural policy. Between 2010–2017, I was engaged an Artistic Assessor for Arts Council England. Since 2014 I have directed the National Summer School for Arts Fundraising and Leadership and recently led the evaluation of the national Arts Fundraising and Philanthropy Programme. I am the Co-Editor of Arts and the Market and have published widely in a number of leading peer-reviewed journals on arts marketing, arts management, cultural policy and cultural value. I am currently running the Arts and Humanities Research Council funded International Network for Audience Research in the Performing Arts; leading the evaluation of the National Theatre's Theatre Nation Partnerships programme; and completing a research monograph on audience engagement, which will be published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2018/19.
